Two names have dominated the post-independence history of Togo: Eyadema & Olympio. Gnassingbe Eyadema Overthrew & Assasinated Sylvanus Olympio in Africa’s First Coup in 1963. He ran the country until his death in 2005. Faure, son of Gnassingbe, then took over.
Gilchrist Olympio, son of Sylavanus has opposed both Eyademas for over 40 years. He was educated in Ghana; studied at the LSE & received a PH.D in Economics at oxford. He has ran & lost 2 elections & survived an assassination attempt in 1992. Now 72 years old he still spearheads the main opposition. But what future does he see for himself & the country he says he loves dearly?
